The first print of a painting by Hailey that I saw was at The Frame Gallery in Bryan.   It was the cat pictured below.  As I looked at more of her works, I became increasingly impressed.  I sent Hailey an email asking her if she was agreeable to having a page in oldartguy.com; she was.  A couple of days latter, we accidentally met each other at SEAD.  Hailey said she recognized my ZZ Top beard.  Aha!  I knew the beard would be useful.

HAILEY HERRERA

“Although I‘ve painted off and on since I was seven, I didn’t begin to work at it
in earnest in 2010.  Even though my art teachers encouraged me to become an artist, I decided to choose my career path as a scientist as my parents wanted. I've been a research scientist and mathematician for some years, but I've never felt I was truly happy or satisfied.  After giving up my art to pursue science and mathematics, I think I lost my way.  I started painting again, and, all of a sudden, I felt as though my repressed passion for art was coming back.

“When I decided to paint again, I was searching for a method to express myself, my feelings, and my interests.  I discovered that I found great satisfaction and peaceful moments in the process.
“My favorite medium is watercolor because I love its spontaneous nature and transparency.  I paint primarily in watercolor but also like to play with ink and acrylic in combination with watercolor. I love to paint on any surface I can think of.   I continuously experiment; I think that’s because of my previous career in mathematics and science.”

Hailey is a watermedia artist who loves learning new techniques and experimentation.  Growing up in Korea, she painted off and on since she was seven.  She came to the United States in 1996 for graduate studies and received her PhD at Texas A&M University, College Station, in 2004.  She worked as a research scientist and lecturer at Virginia Commonwealth University for a short term.  Some time later, she began to take community art classes.  In 2010, she started watercolor painting in earnest.

Hailey loves the watercolor medium for layering, colors, and transparency which appeals to her sense of spontaneity.  Her watercolors are vibrant, bright and rich with incredible depth and wonderful tonal ranges.   She is not content with a particular style but wants to evolve continually.  She loves to enrich her creativity and artistic vision through continued experimentation.  Her painting “Street Art Fair” won “Best of Show” in the 2012 BVAL judged show, “Klein Pulse Comp” won “First Place (semi-pro division)” in the 2013 BVAL Judged show, and “Happy Hour” won the “Herweck's Award” in the 2012 Texas Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition.

Currently she is a member of Brazos Valley Art League, Arts Council of Brazos Valley, Watercolor Art Society-Houston, and Texas Watercolor Society.
