New Art Stuff

Leon Collins is providing our spacer/divider this month. Leon and I were imprisoned in the same high school years ago. Leon was a student, and I did a little teaching. Leon has had some pretty serious health problems recently, and a little prayer for him would be welcome.

When I saw Noel Johnson’s paintings on Facebook, my immediate reaction was, “I’ve got to meet this artist.” I haven’t met her in person yet, but we have chatted on the net, and she is now the newest artist to join us.
She’s said, “Painting is like a dance. At times leading and at times following. The best chance to have a successful painting is to fully engage in the moment,"
Noel retired from a career as an Army Chaplain, and she has rekindled her early passion for painting, which she studied as a young person in California with Don Graham at the Chouinard Art Institute which later became California Institute of the Arts. The art style known as "process" was the training of the important influences in her method. Other process teachers and mentors were Craig Kauffman, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses and Ed Kienholz.
UMHB Art Department Chairman, Hershall Seals, says of her art, "Her paintings have a playful intelligence and are somehow both sophisticated and simple at the same time. It is refreshing to see the fluency of her visual themes and her sense of color and space, which bring a strong structural presence to the work."
If you wish to purchase a piece, email her at chaplain_noel@yahoo.com. These are works on paper in mixed media, primarily acrylic paint, with inks, oil pastel, and pencil.
Welcome Noel aboard at chaplain_noel@yahoo.com.

Roxanne Tuff has been focusing on ranching for several years, but she is still an artist. In fact she was a finalist in the 2015 Hunting Art Award, a very prestigous competition here in Texas.
“I still do illustrations that I sell in my Etsy store and do some commission work.  The last notable Fine Art show I had work in was  New Imagists in the Southwest features the work of thirteen artists, who
were selected from an open call to artists residing in the Southwest and who paint and draw in the pop-surrealist, lowbrow, street art style fostered by publications like Juxtapoz, High Fructose, and Beautiful Decay. The artists included in the exhibition are: Alejandro Augustine Padilla, Carly Veronica, Chad Danger Lindsay, Gaspar Salazar-Mendez, Israel Haros, JL Johnson, Jodie Herrera, Joerael Julian Elliot, Max Neutra, Melissa Parra Morrow, Petro, Roxana Tuff, and Zane White.
“I'm teaching art classes for folks over 50 for the City of San Marcos and trying to find time to make work on the side.”
