Wayne Edwards has five new humorous poems this month:
“Old Coots Fire Department” tells of a grateful farmer’s offer to the fire department which was met with a surprise; “Men Don’t Wash dishes” is the story of a youngster’s plot to get out of doing dishes which goes wrong;
“Unintended Compliment” is the story of a compliment turned into an insult;
“Fishermen’s Lies” relates the story of competing lies; and “Dear Mr. Government Man, Sir” relates how and why a hillbilly escaped incarceration.

Here’s one to whet your appetite.

Dear Mr. Government Man, Sir
by Wayne Edwards

Dear Mr. Government Man, Sir
The law called my folks yesterday.
The sheriff told my ma and pa
That you guys were looking for me.
Said I had up and broke the law.
It seems that when they sign you up,
You’re not allowed to run away.
I know you’re busy catchin’ crooks
But please take time to hear my say.
They took my coveralls away
And then cut all of my hair off.
You won’t believe what they done next,
When they said, “Turn your head and cough!”
It’s plain they were out to get me.
But I would surely be there still,
If that guy at the shootin’ range
Didn’t start yelling, “FIRE AT WILL!”
Sincerely,
Will Turnipseed, Jr.

David Carlton is still working away on the new collection of his poetry, but he’s sent us a brand spanking new poem.
David has a new publisher for his book, Poetry of a Florida Cowboy, and will soon have a second book published, Reflections from my Youth, which is a collection of stories.
Say “Howdy” to David at dcarlton@tamu.edu
and see his website at
http://www.cowboypoetry.com/davidcarlton.htm and view his book, Poetry of a Florida Cowboy, in the Bookstore.

David has a spanking new poem for us this month:
“During my last trip home, me, my wife and Dad spend a whole day riding around the country side visiting family cemeteries, with Dad sharing stories about the persons buried there. Before the day was over, we had covered many years and generations of knowledge about our family, with a few stories of Dad’s youth throw in for good measure. Though it was just a tiny drop of his overall knowledge, it was enough to make me realize just how little I really know, and to inspire me to learn more.
With this in mind, I was inspired to write the following poem.”
 Last Ride

I don’t have to see your face
To hear the words you speak
I don’t have to hold your hand
To feel my knees go weak

I miss the time we spent together
In the days before you passed
Even after all these years
Your memory will always last

I miss the rides we too together
Just listening to your tales
Listing to you with heart and soul
I remember each word so well

What I would give for, just a while
If we could do it one more time
I’d ask you more about your youth
And about things upon your mind

I would drive, so very slow
And make each moment last
Before I drove into the future
While you moved toward the past

I miss our talks Dad, on winding roads
In the days before you left
It’s the time that you opened up
And told me stories I love best

It’s the stories that touched my soul
The stories I never knew
I’d like to think that they changed me some
And made me more like you

Michael O’Brien’s essay this
month is “Just Sayings” which relates his memory of expressions friends and relatives have used through the years.

Bill Neinast, columnist for the Brenham Banner Press,
has eight new essays for us this month:
his essay, “Old Folks Homes,” is Bill’s new thoughts on aging and how it affects the political system;
in “Washington’s Farce,” Bill lists the ways in which the House of Representatives has become a farce; “Our Jury System” is Bill’s summary of elements which are altering our jury system; in
“What to Worry about” Bill points out that climate change ain’t what we should be worried about---robotics is; Impeachment: a Christmas Gift is
Bill’s recall of wonderful gifts he has received and his declaration that the foolishness of impreachment is a gift to the Republicans; “Happy New Decade” is
Bill’s call for a new government resolution to reduce our national debt ; It’s What He Does is Bill’s cautionary note that we whould watch what the President does, not what he tweets;
Tell Bill you appreciate him and his writing at
neins1@aol.com.

I have four new essays this month:
“Heart Attack Leftovers” are the bits and pieces of my heart attack experience that I couldn’t work into my essay “Oh, Yeah...and I Had a Heart Attack”; “Not a Chance from the Get-Go” is a rather sad story about a fellow who kept care of my yard for over a quarter of a century; and “A Mulligan, Please” is just one of my weird thoughts cleverly disquised as an essay; and “Slogans You Remember” which reviews some of the most memorable company slogans of our lifetime.
As a bonus, I have a short story for folks who have no taste in literature, “The Pollster,” which combines some old facts I remember with a lot of malarkey.
Would you believe it---I have a new book, Old Guy: I’m Still Here. My first book was titled Old Guy Has Final Word: It’s All about Me. I put that book together when I was extremely ill and suspected I probably wouldn’t be around long. Well, it turns out that I’m still here and have written over 300 essays.
The selections in this book are just a few that I really like. There is no rhyme or reason for the ones I’ve chosen. They’re a little like the famous box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get. I hope ya’ll enjoy them.
By the way, my good friend, John Grant, provided the cover art. Thanks, John.
The book is available at Amazon.

My book, Old Guy Has Final Word, is still available at Amazon I’ve added a Kindle version. My book has been picked up by Barnes and Noble. The book is a collection of essays suitable to be read by both young and old.
