Metaphysics

I think it was when I was in college that I became aware of the word  “metaphysics.”  It was probably in my one philosophy class taught by an interesting and entertaining fellow by the name of “Small.”  I recall that I wasn't much impressed by metaphysics because it offered no verifiable answers…well, that's the nature of metaphysics: it examines questions that cannot be verified by our senses.

Some of the metaphysical questions are the following.  How was the universe created?  Is human behavior determined by free will or is it beyond our control?  What does it mean to exist? Does God exist?  Are fictional characters, love, or apples real in the same way?  What is the nature of space and time?

In matters of religion, attempts to scientifically prove the existence of God is impossible. The reigning belief that everything can be explained scientifically in terms of natural causes is nonsensical.  That's why we invented the word “faith.”

Why is it we seek answers to questions that we know we cannot obtain---it's man's nature to want to know everything.  I guess Eve eating the apple might explain this…or maybe not.
