I had heard about a residency program sponsored by the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley and housed in the Horlock House History Center in Navasota, Texas.  My old-man curiosity got the best of me, so Linda and I drove to Navasota to meet the three artist residents.   Michael greeted us at the door.  Michael is an humble young fellow who will soon be attending University of Nebraska at Lincoln in the fall.  When you can, go by and visit with Michael and the other residents.

MICHAEL VILLARREAL

Michael Villarreal has always been into creating since he could remember. With the support from his parents, he has accomplish more today than he had ever expected.
Before and after graduation from Texas State University, Michael has exhibited in several places including some reputable galleries around Texas.  Some of which include Red Arrow Contemporary in Dallas, Barbara Davis Gallery and Art Palace in Houston, and Parchman Stremmel Gallery in San Antonio. Michael has also been selected as a finalist
in the Hunting Art Prize 2014. His work was displayed in the Nebraska National Collegiate Juried Art Exhibition in Lincoln, Nebraska which help in making to the decision to attend the MFA program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln starting in the fall of 2014.

Michael says that his work is driven by the materiality of paint and gesture.  I intuitively abstract the shapes of the human form to create a landscape of masses defined by color.

Currently, Michael's days are spent making work in the Navasota Artist in Residence Program until August first of this year.
