I met Mirka at Greta’s Frame Gallery on a First Friday in Bryan, Texas.  she was doing a demonstration of her printing of images.  She asked if I wanted to print one.  Being my normal cranky self, I declined her offer but hung around inspecting her art work.  The more I looked, the more I liked her work.  I checked out her work on line.  Wow!  She really is an accomplished artist.  Welcome, Mirka, to oldartguy.com.

MIRKA HOKKANEN

Mirka Hokkanen was born in 1979 in Helsinki, Finland.  Her favorite things growing up were found in the woods and at flea markets and junk stores which all still contribute to her work as sources of inspiration.
Mirka moved to the U.S. in 1998 to attend Rockford College in IL (BFA 2002). She received both Master of Arts (2004) and Master of Fine Arts (2006) degrees concentrating in printmaking from University of Dallas, TX. Since graduating, Mirka has lived in 3 different states and Germany, teaching, working and learning. She currently works as an artist, illustrator and designer in addition to taking care of two wild kids at home. Her works continue to be exhibited both nationally and internationally.
“When working I use a variety of printmaking and drawing techniques, depending on what materials are available to me at a given time and what best suits the message I am trying to communicate. Lately with the birth of our two kids, I have moved to relief printing (linocutting, engraving) because it allows me to have a kid friendly studio and I can work in the house.

“My works steer to two main categories; one is about animals and nature and the other is about old Finnish hand embroidered textiles that were hung on walls.

“The subject of my art has always been animals and nature.  I love the way God has made such a variety of animals and plants for us to enjoy. I never get tired of drawing fur patterns and adding a spark to an eye. I like to create a body of work that is spiced with a hint of humor, beautiful shapes and a personality.

“The Finnish wallhanging project is a departure of what I normally do. It is a task I took on that includes research on a disappearing hand craft tradition, generating artwork based on the tradition that is relevant and beautiful today, and compiling all my research into a bilingual book on the subject matter. I have worked on this for many years and now that the kids are finally getting older, am hoping to compile most of the book this summer 2015.”
